Mr. Louie platform - Ghana

6 wells were drilled in the Saltpond field in 1978 with the rig Mr. Louie which was thereafter converted to a production platform.

Background

  • The wells were initially shut-in in 1985 and operations commenced again in 2000 until they were shut-in for abandonment in 2016.

  • The rig has 12 legs in clusters of 3 legs each

  • Each cluster of legs is held together at the seabed by a cone-shaped spud can.

  • Penetration of the spud can into the seabed can not be determined but is assumed to be 5-10 ft because of the hard seabed.

  • Hans & Co Oil And Gas Limited and its partners were awarded the contract to permanently abandon the wells and dismantle Mr. Louie platform by Ghana National Petroleum Corporation in October 2021 and the contract was signed in January 2022.

  • Hans & Co engaged Shelf Drilling’s Trident 8 jack up rig for the well plugging and abandonment(P&A) phase and later mobilized their Marine support partner, Equip & Offshore to provide SEWOP LB Fugar for accommodation and cranes for the dismantling phase.

Well Abandonment

  • Hans&Co, together with its partners, Equip & Offshore mobilized the Trident 8 and other well servicing equipment for the P&A phase to site in October 2022.

  • The six wells were safely plugged and abandoned by the end of May 2023 and the Trident 8 was demobilized from location in June 2023.

Platform Dismantling

  • Dismantling of the platform commenced in January 2023 with all the legs above the deck removed.

  • The accommodation and office decks removed

  • The helideck has been cut-off and removed, as well as some of the tanks within the hull.

  • Operations were suspended in October 2023 due to a failure of the cranes on the SEWOP and the need to vary the budget to accommodate the additional work scope that was revealed after access was gained into the hull (There are no existing structural drawings of Mr. Louie hence the plan was to review the contract after the external parts were cut off).
